BIOGRAPHY

Kevin Lopez, always quiet and reserved, grew up in a large extended family, in a completely uninteresting suburb, and always saw himself as a bit of an outsider.

In school, he found comfort in drawing and painting and went on to graduate with a BFA in Art from the University of Houston in 2011. He then worked as a graphic designer and photographer for a time. Then, because of Covid-19 and the cultural and social environment during 2020, he decided to pursue fine art.

His feelings of detachment during his formative years, as well as during mass isolation in 2020, informs his current work and has influenced his choice to explore ideas of multiplicity and solipsism as it pertains to identity through portraits and depictions of the mundane.

Kevin has shown work at Lawndale Art Center and Fort Bend Museum. He has work in the Carolyn Farb collection and Catapult Gallery.

Kevin currently works in his studio at BOX13 ArtSpace in Houston, Texas.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a painter and wood worker based in Houston, Texas. I use the human figure as a vehicle to explore themes of identity and Solipsism as well as the notion that we can never truly know one another. The study of each individual figure allows for the exploration of the knowledge that our experiences are inherently private and unknowable to others.

My work explores the multiplicity and divisions of individuals as well as the ambiguity of understanding identities. Utilizing realistic figures, the work depicts an amalgamation of person(s) placed in barren settings, constructed around unique forms to emphasize the difficulty of forming a definitive perspective of the work and individuals. The work is intended to ask the viewer to question the identity of the individual and, by extension, the way they perceive themselves and others.
